• As part of the “Magic Lantern: Advanced Level” section, the IV Audiovisual Trainers Meeting and the CIMA Meeting will take place on Thursday 25 at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival will host special sessions and meetings aimed at film training and debate through the experiences of professionals linked to the sector. This 23FICLPGC’s parallel activities will take place within the “Magic Lantern” educational section, which, since its inception, seeks to convey to its public, especially the youngest, the value of cinema as a cultural and artistic asset.
Thus, tomorrow Wednesday April 24, at 6:00 p.m., the Festival will feature a masterclass given by filmmaker, programmer and film critic Elena Duque. “Who I Am and Why I Make Films” is the name of this initiative that recovers the title under which a monographic program of her work was presented at the Echo Park Film Center in Los Angeles (USA) in 2020 to explain her path in animation and analog cinema.
According to this edition’s catalog, the participants in this special meeting taking place at Cine Yelmo Las Arenas Screen 5 will be able to learn first-hand “the principles and possibilities of frame-by-frame animation,” as well as receive some guidelines to make personal films “without excessive means” from the Spanish-Venezuelan director, who is also a member of this year’s Bande à Part Jury.
In addition, some of Duque’s experimental short films will be screened during the event, such as La mar salada (Spain, 2014, video, sound, 3 min.), Valdediós (Spain, 2019, super 8 and video, sound, 3 min. ), Colección privada (Spain, Venezuela, 2020, super 8, silent, 13 min.), Mar de coral (Spain, 2022, super 8, silent, 11 min.) and Ojitos mentirosos (Deceitful Eyes) (Spain, 2023, super 8, sound, 6 min.).
IV Audiovisual Trainers Meeting
On the other hand, on Thursday 25 there’ll be two parallel activities aimed at professionals of the sector. The first one will take place from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium. It is the IV Audiovisual Trainers Meeting, which will focus “on the presentation of the ‘Diagnostic Report of Training in the Islands’ Audiovisual Sector: Real Image and Animation’, commissioned by the Canary Islands Institute for Cultural Development and Proexca (Canary Islands Society for Economic Development).”
Likewise, during the event, the project ‘CIFP César Manrique HUB Audiovisual’ will be presented, by which the center has joined the National Network of Centers of T&D Excellence in the Audiovisual Sector. Conceived at the behest of the Festival, where it started its journey in 2019 in what was then called the First Audiovisual Training Conference, this meeting co-organized by the Canaries Audiovisual Cluster (CLAC) under the impetus of Canary Islands Films, and with the support of PROEXCA, “has a double approach: from the productive to the training field, and from the latter to the productive field,” according to the 23FICLPGC’s catalog.
Once again this year, the activity will be attended by audiovisual educators, industry representatives, film associations, cross-sectional stakeholders involved in audiovisual training and technicians from the administrations linked to Education, Employment, Culture and Industry. CIMA Meeting
The second initiative that will take place on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium is the CIMA Meeting of the Association of Women Filmmakers and Audiovisual Media which, on this occasion, will address the topic “Documentary as a tool for change.” Because, according to the catalog, “the documentary, as a film genre, has usually served as a mirror to reality, reflecting from raw angles to deeply personal perspectives on global and local issues.”
“In this context,” it continues, “documentary female voices have been crucial —not only for their ability to narrate— but also for their power to influence and shape social discussions through their unique works, stirring debate and fostering empathy and understanding among diverse audiences.”
For these reasons, in this 23rd Film Festival the event will feature filmmakers who specialize in documentaries within the CIMA Jury: award-winning director and producer Almudena Carracedo; filmmaker and screenwriter Elena Molina; filmmaker María Monreal, who holds a degree in Journalism and a specialization in Performing Arts Production; and filmmaker, teacher, screenwriter and programmer María Abenia.
A closed-door meeting
In addition to its parallel activities, the 23FICLPG will hold a closed-door meeting between representatives of Canarian film festivals and Cristóbal de la Rosa Croissier, Head of Cultural Innovation and Creative Industries of the Canarian Government, at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium on Wednesday, April 24. Its main objective is none other than to emphasize the archipelago’s events in their diversity, as agents in the dissemination of film culture and the audiovisual industry itself.
