He pursued Film Studies at the University of Southern California (USC) and at UCLA. He was a part of the <em>Grupo de Cali <\/em>(<em>Cali Group<\/em>) with Carlos Mayolo and Andr\u00e9s Caicedo. He has directed two feature-length fiction films, PURA SANGRE (PURE BLOOD, 1982) and SOPLO DE VIDA (BREATH OF LIFE, 1999), as well as seven feature documentaries and a score of documentary and fiction shorts, including: AGARRANDO PUEBLO (THE VAMPIRES OF POVERTY, 1978), co-directed with Carlos Mayolo, ANDR\u00c9S CAICEDO: UNOS POCOS BUENOS AMIGOS (1986), LA DESAZ\u00d3N SUPREMA: RETRATO INCESANTE DE FERNANDO VALLEJO (THE SUPREME UNEASINESS: INCESSANT PORTRAIT OF FERNANDO VALLEJO, 2003) and UN TIGRE DE PAPEL (A PAPER TIGER, 2007). His most recent film is TODO COMENZ\u00d3 POR EL FIN (IT ALL STARTED AT THE END, 2015). Luis Ospina is the author of the book\u00a0<em>Palabras al viento, Mis sobras completas\u00a0<\/em>(2007). His work has received awards at international festivals such as Oberhausen, Biarritz, Havana, Sitges, Bilbao, Lille, Miami, Lima, Caracas, Antofagasta, Vi\u00f1a del Mar and Toulouse. Retrospectives of his work have been organized at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, the Cineteca in Mexico, the Cinemateca de Venezuela, the Caixa Cultural in Rio de Janeiro, the M\u00e1rgenes festival and the Cinemateca Distrital. Some of his works have been screened at the Cartier Foundation, the Tate Modern, the Queen Sof\u00eda Museum, the Georges Pompidou Centre, the Jeu de Paume, the Mus\u00e9e du Quai Branly and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
